The self-certification for plumbing and drainlaying scheme commences on 7 September 2026. The voluntary scheme allows endorsed plumbers and drainlayers to self-certify that eligible work complies with a building consent, without the need for building consent authority (BCA) inspections.
The scheme aims to speed up the building consent process while maintaining existing safeguards.
Only plumbing and drainlaying that needs a building consent can be self-certified. All self-certified plumbing and drainlaying work must comply with a building consent.
To self-certify work under the scheme, plumbers and drainlayers must:
- hold certifying registration
- meet the eligibility requirements
- be endorsed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board.
Homeowners and building owners can choose to either:
- have eligible plumbing and drainlaying work self-certified by an endorsed plumber or drainlayer
- continue with the standard BCA inspection process.
