Self-certification for plumbing and drainlaying scheme commences on 7 September 2026
Posted: 7 September 2026
The scheme aims to speed up the building consent process while maintaining existing safeguards.
Only plumbing and drainlaying that needs a building consent can be self-certified. All self-certified plumbing and drainlaying work must comply with a building consent.
To self-certify work under the scheme, plumbers and drainlayers must:
- hold certifying registration
- meet the eligibility requirements
- be endorsed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board.
Homeowners and building owners can choose to either:
- have eligible plumbing and drainlaying work self-certified by an endorsed plumber or drainlayer
- continue with the standard BCA inspection process.
Information for plumbers and drainlayers, BCAs, designers, consent applicants, homeowners and building owners is available on Building Performance.
