Plumbers and drainlayers self-certification scheme

Last updated: 7 July 2026

Use this information to understand the plumbers and drainlayers self-certification scheme. Choose the information most relevant to your role to learn how self-certification affects building consent processes, responsibilities, and compliance requirements.

Self-certification for plumbing and drainlaying is a new, opt-in scheme that lets endorsed plumbers and drainlayers self-certify (sign off) that eligible work complies with the building consent.

This means fewer inspections by building consent authorities (BCAs), faster project timeframes and a more streamlined building consent process.

The scheme is designed to support trusted, competent plumbing and drainlaying professionals while keeping public health, safety and building quality a priority.

Certifying plumbers and drainlayers will be able to apply to become endorsed by the end of 2026 with the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board.
