Reinforcing concrete slabs-on-ground

If you are working on concrete slabs-on-ground this guidance explains the NZS3604:2011 reinforcing requirements and 2 other satisfactory solutions.

More details

This guidance is issued as guidance under section 175 of the Building Act 2004. It updates guidance issued in August 2011.

If you are working to Acceptable Solution B1/AS1 and constructing concrete slabs-on-ground to NZS 3604:2011 specifications and on good ground, you need to reinforce using a minimum of 2.27 kg/m2 of Grade 500E reinforcing mesh fabric that conforms with AS/NZS 4671.

MBIE has worked with reinforcing wire and mesh manufacturers to ensure a range of Grade 500E reinforcing mesh is widely available.

The two satisfactory solutions may still be used if needed:

  1. equivalent capacity mesh
  2. using reinforcing bars.
