Step 1: Applicants check what is required for the proposed alteration

Building consent applicants can use a process to check what their proposed alteration requires.

This process is suitable whether or not the building being altered is earthquake prone.

Flowchart of process for applicant to check requirements of proposed alterations

If the alterations requirements apply, proceed to Step 2.

For earthquake-prone buildings subject to section 133AT, also check whether the alteration meets the definition of a substantial alteration.

Building (Specified Systems, Change the Use, and Earthquake-prone Buildings) Regulations 2005 defines the term 'substantial alteration' for earthquake-prone buildings.

Guidance on substantial alterations is available to help establish whether the proposed alteration meets this definition. If it is a substantial alteration, seismic work needs to be undertaken so that the building is no longer earthquake prone.
