Contents

MBIE prepared the supplementary guidance specifically to help:

  • structural and geotechnical engineers, architects, and insurers work out the best design solutions for specific areas
  • Christchurch City Council’s building consenting staff make consenting decisions.

This followed Christchurch City Council’s (the Council's) release of the GNS Science Report.

It is supplementary to the guidance Repairing and rebuilding houses affected by the Canterbury earthquakes, and includes:

  • high-level geotechnical and structural design principles and criteria
  • structural system and house layout recommendations to account for potential land movement.

Building in toe slump areas of mass movement in the Port Hills (Class II and Class III) is the full supplementary guidance.
